Copywriting Job
A copywriting job is a creative position that involves
planning, research and original development of marketing and advertising material.
The job also includes creating, revising, editing,
fact-checking, proofreading and obtaining approvals for the copy. And if this is not enough, if you are a freelance copywriter you’ll need to
be able to write proposals, prepare contracts, manage accounts and market your business as well.
Needless to say that a copywriting job requires:
- A high
level of creativity
- Accuracy
- Excellent
communication skills at all levels
- Excellent
conceptual ability
The responsibilities
that go with a copywriting job depend on the job, but may include any or all of the following:
- Creating
a variety of marketing and advertising materials, which may include newsletters, web sites, brochures, press releases, direct mail
campaigns, email marketing campaigns, articles, TV and radio commercials/scripts, etc.
- Writing
proposals and preparing contracts
- Consistency in your approach to all your work and dealings with clients, colleagues and other
business relationships.
- Meetings
with clients to gather information and to ensure that project objectives and time frames are understood.
- If the
copywriting job is with a large advertising agency or large company you will be expected to work in a team environment and need to ensure
that copy tone and style are consistent with and complement the work done by other team members.
- Maintain
a high standard of copywriting and exercise quality control on all copy, including obtaining necessary approvals, fact-checking and
keeping accurate records and appropriate backup.
- Research
content, and rewrite/edit content where required.
Required
qualifications and personal traits:
- Most
large advertising agencies or companies require tertiary qualifications, such as a degree in English, journalism, communications or a
related field.
- Some will
require experience as a copywriter with e.g. exposure to writing print promotional materials, web content, articles and copy to support
advertising and marketing initiatives.
- Excellent
written and verbal communication skills, with strong editing and proofreading abilities.
- Ability
to write compelling messages in a range of styles for varied projects and diverse audiences. This would require the following personal traits:
- you
need to be a sharp observer of people and trends;
- ability to understand what makes people tick
- creative problem solver
- move
people to action with the magic of words
- open
mindedness
- Excellent
interpersonal skills – you need to be able to communicate at all levels.
- Ability
to prioritize projects, work within short time frames and meet deadlines.
